    WE SAY

    Campaign: AA's Stephen Woodford faces fierce questions on junk food ads from Parliament

    May 08, 2018

    Advertising Association chief executive Stephen Woodford made the case against tougher restrictions on advertising of foods high in fat, salt or sugar to the House of Commons Health and Social Care Committee yesterday.

    Woodford appeared alongside Shahriar Coupal, director of the Committees of Advertising Practice, and three figures advocating new regulations: Dr Emma Boyland of the University of Liverpool; Professor Russell Viner from the Obesity Health Alliance; and Dan Parker, former marketer and chief executive of Living Loud, a collective of health, digital and creative professionals working to promote healthy living.

    Rules introduced to prevent advertising of unhealthy “junk” food to children are too limited and are failing to stop children seeing such advertisements, experts and campaigners have told MPs.

    MPs on the parliamentary health and social care committee quizzed academics, industry figures, and third sector groups during an evidence session on 8 May for their inquiry into childhood obesity.

    The Times: We’re going to make vegetables sexy, says Levi’s ad guru

    May 04, 2018

    Sexy advertising could do for vegetables what Nike has done for running, according to the British advertising guru recruited to improve their image. The “eat your greens” message has backfired by causing children to regard eating vegetables as a chore, said Sir John Hegarty, who created the Levi’s launderette advert in 1985, in which a man strips to his underwear. Sir John, 73, also created the Flat Eric advert for Levi’s.

    One of Britain’s advertising gurus has been recruited to market vegetables in the drive to improve children’s diets.

    Sir John Hegarty, the man behind Audi’s “Vorsprung durch Technik”, is backing the Veg Power crowdfunding campaign to show that creative marketing can encourage children to eat their greens. He argues that “advertising for good” can play a role in ending a situation where 80 per cent of children do not get enough fruit and veg.

Statistics show there are now 12.3 million people at increased risk of type 2 diabetes and that the most deprived five-year-olds are more than twice as likely to be obese than their well-off counterparts.
